In 2025, the Government celebrated a major milestone for working people across Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock as the Employment Rights Act became law – a landmark achievement delivered by the Labour Government that I strongly championed and was pleased to see be put into law.

This new legislation brings workers’ rights into the modern era. It ends exploitative zero-hour contracts, introduces day-one rights to paternal, paternity and bereavement leave, strengthens salutary sick pay, and creates a new Fair Work Agency to uphold standards across the country.

Despite attempts by opposite parties to block or weaken the reforms, the Act has now passed – giving employees greater security and giving responsible local businesses the clarity they need to plan ahead.

Key improvements, including changes to sick pay and paternity leave, will begin rolling out from April 2026, with further protections for the lowest-paid following the Government’s timetable.

The Act also reduces the qualifying period for unfair dismissal from 24 months to 6 months, while maintaining day-one protections against discrimination and automatic unfair dismissal. This ensures workers have stronger rights, while businesses have time to adapt to the changes.

I have heard directly from residents about how these reforms will mean – from better working conditions to greater stability and opportunity. I also welcome the benefits for local employers who already treat their staff well, helping level the playing field and improve retention.

This is a proud moment for the constituency: a modern set of employment rights that support workers, strengthens good businesses, and helps build an economy that works for everyone.
